BMW Tyres in Park Royal

The right tyre size for a BMW depends on the model, the generation and the wheels fitted, and on many BMWs the front and rear sizes are different. A G20 3 Series can be on 225/50 R17 all round, or on a staggered 18-inch set with 225/45 R18 fronts and 255/40 R18 rears. Sizes for 22 BMW models and generations, cross-checked against tyre-maker and retailer fitment listings. One model often lists several sizes, one per wheel option. Fitment listings are a guide: the size on your own tyres, or on the placard in the door frame, is the one to match.

BMW models at a glance

• 1 Series F20: The rear-wheel-drive 2015 to 2019 1 Series uses 195/55 R16 to 225/45 R17, and many 17 and 18-inch options are staggered, such as 225/40 R18 front with 245/35 R18 rear.
• 1 Series F40: The front-wheel-drive 1 Series from 2019 uses the same size on all four corners: 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17 or 225/40 R18.
• 2 Series Active Tourer F45: The facelifted 2018 to 2021 Active Tourer is covered here on 205/60 R16 or 205/55 R17, and 18 and 19-inch options also exist.
• 2 Series Active Tourer U06: The Active Tourer from 2022 uses the same size front and rear: 205/65 R16, 205/60 R17, 225/50 R18 or 225/45 R19.
• 2 Series Gran Coupe F44: The 2020 to 2024 Gran Coupe shares the F40 1 Series sizes: 205/55 R16, 225/45 R17 or 225/40 R18.
• 3 Series F30: The facelifted 2015 to 2019 3 Series ranges from 205/60 R16 to 225/45 R18, with staggered 18 and 19-inch sets such as 225/40 R19 front and 255/35 R19 rear.
• 3 Series G20: The 3 Series from 2019 uses 205/60 R16, 225/50 R17 or 225/45 R18, with staggered sets of 225/45 R18 and 255/40 R18, or 225/40 R19 and 255/35 R19.

• 5 Series G60: The 5 Series from 2023 uses 225/55 R18 or 245/45 R19, with staggered 20 and 21-inch sets such as 245/40 R20 front and 275/35 R20 rear.
• X1 F48: The 2015 to 2022 X1 uses 225/55 R17 on most sDrive and xDrive versions, or 225/45 R19, and 18-inch options also exist.
• X1 U11: The X1 from 2022 uses 205/65 R17, 225/55 R18, 245/45 R19, or 245/40 R20 on the M35i xDrive.
• X2 F39: The 2018 to 2023 X2 uses 225/55 R17 on most versions, and the M35i uses 225/45 R19.
• X3 F25: The facelifted 2014 to 2017 X3 uses 225/60 R17 or 245/50 R18, with staggered 19-inch sets of 245/45 R19 front and 275/40 R19 rear.
• X3 G01: The 2017 to 2024 X3 uses 225/60 R18 or 245/50 R19, and the 20 and 21-inch sets are staggered, such as 245/45 R20 front and 275/40 R20 rear on the M40d.
• X3 G45: The X3 from 2024 uses 225/60 R18 or 245/50 R19, with staggered 20 and 21-inch sets such as 255/45 R20 front and 285/40 R20 rear.
• X5 F15: The 2013 to 2018 X5 uses 255/55 R18 or 255/50 R19, with staggered sets of 255/50 R19 and 285/45 R19, or 275/40 R20 and 315/35 R20.
• X5 G05: The X5 from 2018 uses 255/55 R18, 265/50 R19 or 275/45 R20, with staggered 20, 21 and 22-inch sets up to 275/35 R22 front and 315/30 R22 rear.
• i3: The facelifted 2017 to 2022 i3 uses narrow, tall tyres: 155/70 R19 front with 175/60 R19 rear, or 155/60 R20 front with 175/55 R20 rear.
• i4 G26: The 2021 to 2024 i4 uses 225/55 R17 all round, and its 18, 19 and 20-inch sets are staggered, such as 245/40 R19 front and 255/40 R19 rear.

Staggered sizes: front and rear tyres are not the same

Many rear-wheel-drive-based BMWs, including the 3, 4 and 5 Series, and some X3 and X5 versions, use staggered sizes on their larger wheels, with a wider tyre on the rear axle. A G30 5 Series on 19-inch staggered wheels, for example, runs 245/40 R19 at the front and 275/35 R19 at the rear. Because the sizes differ, these tyres cannot be swapped from front to rear to even out wear.

When you book, read the size from a front tyre and a rear tyre. If you only replace one axle, tell us which one, so we order the right size.

Star-marked and run-flat tyres

BMW-approved original-equipment tyres carry a star symbol (*) on the sidewall. It shows the tyre was developed and tested with BMW for that car. Star-marked tyres are not the only choice: other tyres that match the car can also be fitted. If you want to stay with a star-marked tyre, look for the symbol next to the size on your current tyres and mention it when you book.

Many BMW models come with run-flat tyres as original equipment, and BMW promotes them as a safety feature and as an alternative to carrying a spare wheel. We supply run-flat tyres, so if your BMW has them, tell us when you book and we will quote for the same type.

Electric BMWs: the i3 and i4

The i3 uses unusually narrow, tall tyres, such as 155/70 R19 at the front and 175/60 R19 at the rear, so check the exact size before ordering. Most i4 wheel options are staggered as well: only the 17-inch set (225/55 R17) is the same size all round, while the 18, 19 and 20-inch sets have wider rear tyres.

Wheel alignment on a BMW

Wide and staggered BMW sizes, such as 275/35 R19 on a 5 Series or 315/35 R21 on an X5, are expensive to replace, and staggered tyres cannot be rotated to spread wear. If one edge of a tyre is wearing faster than the rest, or the steering pulls or sits off-centre, new tyres will wear the same way until the alignment is corrected. We use Hunter equipment for four-wheel alignment, from £50, and it is worth checking when you fit new tyres.
