What is TPMS sensor replacement?
A Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warns you on the dashboard when a tyre drops well below its correct pressure; the RAC puts the usual trigger at around 25% under-inflation. Direct systems have a battery-powered sensor inside each wheel, normally built into the valve, that measures pressure and radios it to the car. Indirect systems have no wheel sensors at all and work it out from the ABS wheel-speed sensors, because a soft tyre turns at a slightly different rate from the others. The sensor battery is sealed in and cannot be changed on its own, and TyreSafe puts its typical life at five to ten years, so when it runs down the whole sensor is replaced. Sensors can also be broken during a careless tyre change or corroded by moisture and road salt. Since November 2014 every new passenger car sold in the EU has had to carry TPMS, and in Great Britain a malfunctioning system on a car first used on or after 1 January 2012 is a major MOT defect.
How we carry out TPMS sensor replacement
We start with the tyres, because a warning light is often doing its job: every pressure is set to the figure on the door pillar or in the handbook, with the tyres cold. Then a TPMS tool reads each sensor in turn, confirming whether it transmits, what pressure it reports, its ID and, where the sensor reports it, the condition of its battery. That separates a leaking tyre from a flat sensor battery or a dead unit. If a sensor has failed we break the tyre down, fit the replacement sensor, reinflate and rebalance the wheel. The new sensor is then programmed or relearned to the car, which some vehicles do by themselves on a short drive and others need done with the tool, and the system is reset. On indirect systems a warning that persists after a reset is usually a wheel-speed sensor or ABS fault, which our diagnostics service traces.

Can I drive with the tyre pressure warning light on?
Check your tyres first. A steady light usually means at least one tyre is well below its correct pressure, so stop somewhere safe, check all four and inflate them to the figure in the handbook or on the door pillar. If the light flashes when you start the car and then stays lit, or will not clear once every tyre is correct, the system has a fault, most often a sensor, and it is worth having it diagnosed rather than living with it.
Will a faulty TPMS sensor fail my MOT?
It can. For cars first used on or after 1 January 2012, the MOT inspection manual lists a tyre pressure monitoring system that is malfunctioning or obviously not working as a major defect. A light that is on only because a tyre is genuinely low is not a malfunction. We do not carry out MOTs, but we can diagnose and fix a TPMS fault before your test.
How long do TPMS sensors last?
The battery is sealed inside the sensor, so the sensor's life is the battery's life. TyreSafe puts it at typically five to ten years, depending on how the car is driven and the conditions it sees. Sensors can also be damaged earlier by kerb strikes, corrosion or careless tyre fitting.
Do all four TPMS sensors need replacing at once?
Not necessarily. We read every sensor and replace the one that has failed. If the sensors are original and the car is getting on, the others may be close to the end of their batteries too, so we tell you what each one reports and you decide whether to replace one now or more of them together.
Does a new TPMS sensor need programming?
Yes. The car has to learn the new sensor's ID. Some vehicles do that on their own after a short drive, while others need the ID written in with a TPMS tool. We programme or relearn the sensor and reset the system as part of the job, so you leave with the warning cleared.
