What is wheel alignment?

Alignment is the set of angles at which your wheels meet the road, and there are three that matter. Toe is whether the wheels point straight ahead or slightly in or out; it is the angle that scrubs tread away fastest when it is wrong. Camber is the lean of the wheel seen from the front, which decides whether the tyre wears its inner or outer edge. Caster is the tilt of the steering axis, and it governs straight-line stability and how the wheel returns to centre after a corner. Suspension components have tolerances, bushes soften and impacts move things, so these angles drift from the day the car leaves the factory. Tracking usually means the front toe only; a four-wheel alignment measures and, where the car allows, adjusts all four corners including rear toe and thrust angle.

How we carry out wheel alignment

We start with your description: which way it pulls, where the tyres are wearing. Before anything is measured the car is checked for the faults that would make a reading meaningless, worn track rod ends, tired bushes, soft or uneven pressures. Pressures are corrected, then the car goes onto the level alignment ramp and the Hawk Eye heads are set up at each corner. The HD cameras read the wheels together, and the live figures come up against the manufacturer's data for your exact model. That first read is what decides the job: front toe only on a car with no rear adjustment, or a full four-wheel set-up where there is. We adjust, re-measure and print before-and-after figures.
