We put each wheel on the balancing machine, measure exactly where it is heavy, fit correcting weights to the rim and spin it again to confirm it runs true. What is wheel balancing?
No tyre and rim are ever perfectly even. Small differences in the rubber, the rim and the valve leave heavier spots, and when the wheel turns hundreds of times a minute at road speed those few grams pull it off centre and set up a vibration you feel inside the car. Wheel balancing corrects that.
A spin balancer measures two things at once: static imbalance, a heavy point that makes the wheel hop up and down, and dynamic imbalance, weight sitting to one side of the centreline that makes it wobble from side to side. Small weights are then fitted to the inner and outer edges of the rim to cancel it out, clip-on weights on the rim flange or adhesive weights hidden inside the barrel of an alloy, depending on the wheel.
Balancing is a separate job from wheel alignment. Balancing deals with the weight around each wheel and cures vibration; alignment sets the angles the wheels sit at and cures pulling, a crooked steering wheel and uneven wear. The quick way to remember it: balancing stops the shake, alignment stops the pull.
How we carry out wheel balancing
We start by asking where you feel the vibration and at what speed, because, as the RAC notes, a shake through the steering wheel usually points to the front wheels and one through the seat or floor to the rear.
The car goes up and each wheel comes off and is checked for anything balancing cannot fix: a buckled rim, a bulge in the tyre, uneven wear, or mud and stones packed inside the barrel that would throw the reading.
Old weights are removed, the wheel is mounted on the balancing machine and spun, and the machine shows where weight is needed on each side of the rim and how much. The weights are fitted, the wheel is spun again to confirm the reading has come back close to zero, and then it goes back on the car. If the check shows the real fault is alignment, a damaged wheel or a worn tyre, we tell you that rather than balancing the problem away.

There is no fixed mileage interval. Wheels should be balanced whenever a new tyre is fitted, after a puncture repair, when tyres are swapped between axles, after a hard kerb or pothole impact, and any time you notice vibration or uneven tread wear. Goodyear notes there is no mileage-based guidance, and your vehicle handbook may give advice for your model. If the car feels smooth at every speed, the wheels are very likely still balanced.

Can I keep driving with unbalanced wheels?
Short journeys will not do immediate harm, but it is not worth leaving. The constant vibration wears tyres unevenly, puts extra stress on the suspension and its components, and can reduce fuel economy. If the shake is severe or appeared suddenly after a knock, have the wheel and tyre checked promptly, as damage may be the cause rather than a lost weight.
Will balancing fix a car that pulls to one side?
No. Balancing only cures vibration. A pull, or a steering wheel that is off-centre when you drive straight, is almost always an alignment fault, and sometimes a tyre pressure or tyre fault. We check which one you need before any work starts, and alignment is carried out on our Hunter Hawk Eye system in the same workshop.
