How run-flat tyres work

A run-flat tyre has reinforced, self-supporting sidewalls that can carry the weight of the car even with no air pressure. The exact limits vary by manufacturer, so it is always worth checking your handbook.

Why a tyre-pressure system is essential

Because a run-flat can look and feel normal when it is actually flat, cars fitted with them rely on a tyre-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to warn you of a loss of pressure. If your car came on run-flats from the factory, it will have TPMS, and it is important to keep it working and to fit run-flats rather than standard tyres unless your vehicle is suitable for conversion. We will advise on the right choice for your car.

Recognising run-flat markings

  • Common on BMW, Mini and some Mercedes and other models as standard
  • Marked by codes such as RFT, RSC, SSR, ZP, EMT or ROF on the sidewall
  • Firmer ride than standard tyres due to the reinforced sidewalls
  • Should be replaced after running flat, not repaired, in most cases

Who run-flat tyres suit

Run-flats suit drivers who want the reassurance of not being stranded, and owners of cars, particularly BMWs and Minis, that came fitted with them and have no spare wheel. If you prefer a softer ride and are happy carrying a spare or a repair kit, standard tyres may suit you better, and in some cases we can advise on switching. Send us your registration and we will confirm whether your car needs run-flats and quote the right option.

Call 020 3886 2355 or WhatsApp your registration to 07476 586 589 and we will confirm the correct run-flat tyre for your vehicle, fully fitted.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I get tyres fitted the same day?

In most cases yes. We hold a wide range in stock and can order quickly, so most tyres are fitted the same day while you wait at our Park Royal workshop. Walk-ins are welcome.

How do I know if my car has run-flat tyres?

Look for markings such as RFT, RSC, SSR, ZP, EMT or ROF on the sidewall, and check whether your car has a tyre-pressure monitoring system and no spare wheel. If you are unsure, send us your registration and we will confirm.

Can a run-flat tyre be repaired?

In most cases no. Once a run-flat has been driven on while flat, its structure may be compromised, so it should usually be replaced rather than repaired. We will inspect it and advise honestly.

Do run-flat tyres give a harder ride?

They can. The reinforced sidewalls that let you drive on after a puncture also make the tyre stiffer, so the ride is often a little firmer than on standard tyres.
