Tesla Tyres in Park Royal

The right tyre size for a Tesla depends on the model, the generation and the wheels. A Model 3 on 18-inch wheels uses 235/45 R18, a Model Y on 19-inch wheels uses 255/45 R19, and many Performance, Model S and Model X versions run different sizes front and rear. Tesla tyre sizes by model

Sizes for 9 Tesla models and generations, cross-checked against tyre-maker and retailer fitment listings. One model often lists several sizes, one per wheel option. Fitment listings are a guide: the size on your own tyres, or on the placard in the door frame, is the one to match.

Tesla models at a glance

• Model 3: The 2017 to 2023 Model 3 uses 235/45 R18 or 235/40 R19, with 235/35 R20 or 245/35 R20 listed for the Performance.
• Model 3 Highland: The Model 3 from 2023 uses 235/45 R18 or 235/40 R19 on the RWD and Long Range, and the 2024-on Performance runs staggered 235/35 R20 and 275/30 R20 or 235/40 R19 and 265/35 R19 sets.
• Model Y: The 2020 to 2025 Model Y uses 255/45 R19 or 255/40 R20, with 255/35 R21 front and 275/35 R21 rear on the Performance's 21-inch wheels.
• Model Y Juniper: The Model Y from 2025 uses 255/45 R19 or 255/40 R20, with 255/35 R21 front and 275/35 R21 rear on the Performance's 21-inch wheels.
• Model S: The 2012 to 2016 Model S uses 245/45 R19 on 19-inch wheels, or 245/35 R21 all round or with 265/35 R21 at the rear on 21-inch wheels.
• Model S facelift: The 2016 to 2021 Model S uses 245/45 R19 on 19-inch wheels, or 245/35 R21 all round or with 265/35 R21 at the rear on 21-inch wheels.
• Model S refresh: The 2021 to 2026 Model S runs staggered sizes on every version: 255/45 R19 front with 285/40 R19 rear, or 265/35 R21 front with 295/30 R21 rear.
• Model X: The 2015 to 2021 Model X uses 265/50 R19 all round, or staggered 255/45 R20 and 275/45 R20, or 265/35 R22 and 285/35 R22.
• Model X refresh: The 2021 to 2026 Model X runs staggered sizes: 265/45 R20 or 255/45 R20 front with 275/45 R20 rear, or 265/35 R22 front with 285/35 R22 rear.

T0, T1 and T2 markings and noise-reducing tyres

Tyres made to Tesla's original-equipment specification carry a T0, T1 or T2 marking on the sidewall. Examples are the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 235/45 ZR18 98Y XL T0 listed for the Model 3 and the Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 EV 255/45 R19 104W XL T1 listed for the Model Y. A tyre with the marking is the one Tesla specified for the car. You do not have to buy a marked tyre, but choosing one keeps the car closest to how it left the factory.

Several Tesla-marked tyres for the Model 3 and Model Y are noise-reducing versions: Michelin Acoustic, which has a polyurethane foam layer inside the tyre, or Hankook Sound Absorber. If your current tyres have foam inside, replacing them with the same type keeps road noise closest to what you are used to.

Load index: why XL matters on a Model 3 and Model Y

The Model 3 and Model Y sizes carry high load indexes, for example 98 on the Model 3's 235/45 R18 and 104 on the Model Y's 255/45 R19. The Tesla-coded tyres in these sizes are XL (extra load) versions. A replacement must match or exceed the load index shown on the car's tyre placard, so a standard-load tyre in the same size may not be suitable.

Staggered sizes on Performance, Model S and Model X

Some Teslas use wider tyres at the rear than at the front. This applies to the 2024-on Model 3 Performance (235/35 R20 front with 275/30 R20 rear, or 235/40 R19 front with 265/35 R19 rear), the Model Y Performance on 21-inch wheels (255/35 R21 front, 275/35 R21 rear), every refreshed Model S from 2021, the Model S on 21-inch staggered sets, and the Model X on 20-inch and 22-inch wheels.

On a staggered car the front and rear tyres cannot be swapped between axles, and each axle must be replaced with its own size. Check both sizes before you order, because the front and rear tyres often wear at different rates.

Alignment and balancing on a Tesla

Tesla sizes are wide and low-profile, from 235/45 R18 on a Model 3 up to 285/35 R22 on the rear of a Model X, so they cost more to replace than tyres on a typical small car. If one edge of a tyre is wearing faster than the rest, or the steering pulls or sits off-centre, have the alignment checked when you fit new tyres, or the new ones will wear the same way. We use Hunter equipment for four-wheel alignment, from £50.

If the steering wheel vibrates at speed, the wheels may need balancing, which we also do on its own. Balancing is included when we fit a new tyre.
