Volkswagen Tyres in Park Royal

The right tyre size for a Volkswagen depends on the model, the generation and the wheels fitted. A Golf Mk8, for example, is listed on sizes from 195/65 R15 to 235/35 R19. Volkswagen tyre sizes by model

Sizes for 17 Volkswagen models and generations, cross-checked against tyre-maker and retailer fitment listings. One model often lists several sizes, one per wheel option. Fitment listings are a guide: the size on your own tyres, or on the placard in the door frame, is the one to match.

Volkswagen models at a glance

• Golf Mk7: The 2012 to 2020 Golf is listed on sizes from 185/70 R15 to 235/35 R19, with the 19-inch 235/35 R19 confirmed on performance versions such as the GTI Clubsport and Golf R.
• Golf Mk8: The Golf from 2020 is listed on 195/65 R15 up to 235/35 R19, and the 235/35 R19 was confirmed on the GTI.
• Polo Mk5: The 2009 to 2017 Polo is listed on sizes from 175/70 R14 to 215/40 R17, and 195/50 R16 was confirmed only on performance versions such as the GTI.
• Polo Mk6: The Polo from 2017 is listed on 185/70 R14 up to 215/40 R18, and the 18-inch size was confirmed only on the Polo GTI.
• T-Cross: The T-Cross from 2019 is listed on 195/60 R16, 205/60 R16, 205/55 R17 and 215/45 R18.

• Touran Mk2: The Touran from 2015 is listed on 205/60 R16, 205/55 R17, 215/55 R17 and 225/45 R18.
• ID.3: The ID.3 from 2020 uses the same size front and rear on 215/55 R18, 215/50 R19 or 215/45 R20.
• ID.4: The ID.4 from 2021 runs wider rear tyres than fronts on 19, 20 and 21-inch wheels, while the 18-inch Pure uses 235/60 R18 all round.
• Caddy Mk4: The 2015 to 2020 Caddy is listed on passenger tyres in 195/65 R15, 205/55 R16 and 205/50 R17.
• Caddy Mk5: The Caddy from 2020 is listed on passenger tyres in 205/60 R16 96H, 215/55 R17 98H and 225/45 R18 95H.
• Transporter T6/T6.1: The 2015 to 2024 Transporter runs commercial C tyres such as 205/65 R16C and 215/60 R17C, plus single-load-index sizes such as 235/55 R17 and 255/45 R18.
• Crafter Mk2: The Crafter from 2017 runs commercial C tyres from 205/75 R16C to 235/60 R17C, and the load index varies between versions on the same size.

Tyre pressures and pressure warnings on a Volkswagen

Volkswagen UK says the correct tyre pressures for your car are given in the owner's manual and on the inside of the fuel filler flap. Use the figure for the tyre size you actually have fitted.

Volkswagen also notes that its passenger cars have had tyre pressure monitoring since November 2014, and that the system does not replace regular manual pressure checks. Check your pressures with a gauge every few weeks, even if no warning is showing.

ID.3 and ID.4: electric Volkswagen tyres

Volkswagen UK says its ID. electric models use tyres it calls +Tyres, with special rubber compounds, large rims and specific sizes and widths to cope with the driving forces of the electric motor and help range. The ID.3 is listed on 215/55 R18, 215/50 R19 and 215/45 R20, with the same size front and rear.

The ID.4 is different. On 19, 20 and 21-inch wheels it runs a staggered set: wider 255-section tyres on the rear and 235-section tyres on the front, for example 235/55 R19 front with 255/50 R19 rear. Because the sizes differ, the front and rear tyres cannot be swapped between axles, and replacements are bought per axle. The 18-inch ID.4 Pure uses 235/60 R18 all round. Give us both the front and rear sizes when you book.

Transporter, Crafter and Caddy: van tyres and load ratings

The Transporter T6 and T6.1 and the Crafter run commercial C tyres on their 16 and 17-inch sizes. These carry two load indices, such as 205/65 R16C 107/105T on the Transporter. On the Crafter, the same size can come with different load indices on different versions: 235/65 R16C is listed at 121/119R or 115/113R. A replacement must match the load index on your van, not just the size, so give us the full marking from the tyre sidewall.

Some Transporter sizes, such as 235/55 R17 and 255/45 R18, have a single load index rather than a C marking. The Caddy Mk4 and Mk5 are listed on passenger tyres, for example 205/55 R16 94H on the Mk4 and 215/55 R17 98H on the Mk5, not C-type tyres.

Wheel alignment on a Volkswagen

Wide, low-profile tyres like the 235/35 R19 on the Golf GTI, 255/40 R20 on the Tiguan or 255/40 R21 on the ID.4 cost more to replace, so it pays to make sure the wheels are pointing the right way before new ones go on. If one edge of a tyre is wearing faster than the rest, or the steering pulls or sits off-centre, have the alignment checked before or when you fit new tyres. Otherwise the new ones will wear the same way. We use Hunter equipment for four-wheel alignment, from £50.
