What 215/60 R16 means

215 mmWidth
60%Aspect ratio (sidewall ÷ width)
16"Rim diameter (406.4 mm)
664.4 mmOverall diameter, new and unloaded
  • 215: the tyre is 215 mm wide, measured across the sidewalls.
  • 60: the sidewall height is 60% of the width, so 215 × 60% = 129 mm.
  • R: radial construction. A ZR in the same place is the same size with a speed marking for over 240 km/h.
  • 16: it fits a 16-inch wheel. Overall diameter is 16 × 25.4 mm plus two sidewalls: 664.4 mm.

The load index and speed rating follow the size on the sidewall (for example 91V). Replace like for like or higher, as your handbook states.

Frequently asked questions

Is 215/60 R16 the same as 215/60 ZR16?

Yes, the dimensions are the same. The Z marks a tyre rated for over 240 km/h (149 mph); the exact rating is the letter after the load index, such as W or Y. Fit at least the speed rating your handbook gives for the car.

Can I fit 205/70 R15 instead of 215/60 R16?

Only if 205/70 R15 is listed for your car. On paper it is 668 mm tall against 664.4 mm for 215/60 R16, a 0.5% difference, so the speedometer would barely change. It also needs a 15-inch wheel instead of a 16-inch one. Wheel width, arch clearance, load index and speed rating must suit the car too, so check the handbook or the door placard, and fit one size across an axle.

How tall is a 215/60 R16 tyre?

About 664.4 mm (26.2 inches) across when new and unloaded: the 16-inch rim (406.4 mm) plus two sidewalls of 129 mm, which is 60% of the 215 mm width. Real tyres differ by a few millimetres between brands and patterns.

Which cars use 215/60 R16 tyres?

Fitment listings give 215/60 R16 for the Audi Q2, Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-3, MG ZS / ZS Hybrid+ and Peugeot 3008, among others. One model can use several sizes depending on its wheels, so check the sidewall of your own tyres before you book.
