Volvo Tyres in Park Royal

The right tyre size for a Volvo depends on the model, the generation and the wheels fitted. The XC90 from 2015 takes 235-width tyres on 18 and 19-inch wheels but 275-width tyres on 20 to 22-inch wheels, and the electric XC40 uses different sizes from the petrol one. Volvo tyre sizes by model

Sizes for 16 Volvo models and generations, cross-checked against tyre-maker and retailer fitment listings. One model often lists several sizes, one per wheel option. Fitment listings are a guide: the size on your own tyres, or on the placard in the door frame, is the one to match.

Volvo models at a glance

• XC40: The petrol, diesel and hybrid XC40 from 2017 uses 235/60 R17, 235/55 R18, 235/50 R19, 245/45 R20 or 245/40 R21, the same size on all four wheels.
• XC40 Recharge / EX40: The electric XC40 from 2020 (renamed EX40 in 2024) uses 235/50 R19 front with 255/45 R19 rear, or 235/45 R20 front with 255/40 R20 rear.
• C40 Recharge / EC40: The C40 from 2021 (renamed EC40 in 2024) uses the same staggered sizes as the electric XC40: 235/50 R19 and 255/45 R19, or 235/45 R20 and 255/40 R20.
• XC60 Mk1: The 2013 to 2017 XC60 uses 235/65 R17, 235/60 R18, 235/55 R19 or 255/45 R20.
• XC60 Mk2: The XC60 from 2017 uses 235/60 R18, 235/55 R19, 255/45 R20, 255/40 R21 or 265/35 R22.
• XC90 Mk2: The XC90 from 2015 uses 235/60 R18 or 235/55 R19, and 275/45 R20, 275/40 R21 or 275/35 R22 on larger wheels.
• V40: The 2012 to 2019 V40 uses 205/55 R16, 205/50 R17 or 225/45 R17, 225/40 R18 or 235/35 R19, with 195/65 R15 on the D2 diesel only.
• V40 Cross Country: The 2012 to 2019 V40 Cross Country uses 205/60 R16, 225/50 R17, 225/45 R18 or 225/40 R19.
• V60 Mk1: The 2013 to 2018 V60 uses 205/60 R16 or 215/55 R16, 215/50 R17 or 235/45 R17, 235/40 R18 or 235/40 R19.
• S60 Mk2: The 2013 to 2018 S60 uses the same sizes as the V60 of that period, from 205/60 R16 to 235/40 R19.
• V60 Mk2: The V60 from 2018 uses 215/60 R16, 225/50 R17, 235/45 R18, 235/40 R19 or 245/35 R20.
• V60 Cross Country Mk2: The V60 Cross Country from 2018 uses 235/50 R18 or 215/55 R18, 235/45 R19 or 245/40 R20.
• S60 Mk3: The S60 from 2019 uses 225/50 R17, 235/45 R18, 235/40 R19 or 245/35 R20.
• V90 / S90: The V90 and S90 from 2016 use 245/45 R18, 255/40 R19, 255/35 R20 or 245/40 R20, and 245/35 R21, with 225/55 R17 on the D3 and D4 diesels only.
• V90 Cross Country: The V90 Cross Country from 2016 uses 235/55 R18, 235/50 R19, 245/45 R20 or 245/40 R21.
• EX30: The electric EX30 from 2023 uses 225/55 R18, 245/45 R19 or 245/40 R20, the same size front and rear.

Electric Volvos: different sizes front and rear

The electric XC40 (sold as the XC40 Recharge, renamed EX40 in 2024) and the C40 Recharge (renamed EC40 in 2024) run staggered tyres, with wider tyres on the rear axle. On 19-inch wheels that is 235/50 R19 front and 255/45 R19 rear. On 20-inch wheels it is 235/45 R20 front and 255/40 R20 rear. Because the front and rear sizes differ, the tyres cannot be swapped between axles. Give us both sizes when you book.

Do not assume a petrol, diesel or hybrid XC40 size will fit the electric car. The non-electric XC40 uses the same size on all four wheels, from 235/60 R17 to 245/40 R21. The EX30 (2023 onwards) also uses one size front and rear: 225/55 R18, 245/45 R19 or 245/40 R20.

The VOL marking and load index

Tyres approved by Volvo as original equipment carry the marking VOL on the sidewall. Fitment data lists VOL-marked tyres for most V90 and S90 versions, several second-generation XC60 versions and the XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid. If your current tyres carry VOL, tell us when you book and we can quote a like-for-like replacement with the same marking.

The same size can also come with a different load index depending on the engine. On the XC40, Michelin lists 245/45 R20 as 99V for the T3, T4, T5 and D3, but 103V for the B3, B4 and B5 mild hybrids. On the electric XC40, the 19-inch pair is 99V front and 100V rear on the single-motor car, but 103H and 104H on the twin-motor P8. Read the full size, including the load and speed index, from a tyre on the car before ordering.

Two sizes on the same wheel: check before ordering

Several Volvos list two different sizes on the same wheel diameter, so the wheel size alone does not tell you which tyre to buy:

• V40 (2012 to 2019): 205/50 R17 or the wider 225/45 R17.
• V60 and S60 (2013 to 2018): 205/60 R16 or 215/55 R16, and 215/50 R17 or 235/45 R17.
• V60 Cross Country (2018 onwards): 235/50 R18 or the narrower 215/55 R18.
• V90 and S90: 255/35 R20 or 245/40 R20.

Cross Country versions of the V40, V60 and V90 also use taller tyres than the standard cars, so a V90 size will not suit a V90 Cross Country. Check the sidewall, or bring the car in and we will read it for you.

Alignment and balancing

Wide tyres such as the 275/35 R22 on an XC90 or the 265/35 R22 on an XC60 cost more to replace, so make sure the wheels are pointing the right way before new ones go on. If one edge is wearing faster than the rest, or the steering pulls or sits off-centre, have the alignment checked when you fit new tyres, or the new ones will wear the same way. On an electric XC40 or C40, where the tyres cannot be rotated front to rear, uneven wear on one axle cannot be evened out by swapping them round.

We use Hunter equipment for four-wheel alignment, from £50. If the steering wheel vibrates at speed, the wheels may need balancing, which we also do on its own. If a tyre pressure sensor has failed, we can replace it.
